Lab Technician- Metallurgist

Job description

Radius Bramah are currently recruiting a Lab Technician to carry out metallurgical testing in support of aerospace manufacturing processes on materials such as stainless steels, titanium and nickel alloys. Testing will include metallography, hardness testing and elemental analysis by inert gas fusion. Support may also be required on geometric inspection of completed parts. Work is to comply to applicable customer and other third party specifications e.g. ASTM, NADCAP, ISO.

Principle Accountabilities:

• Carry out metallurgical analysis to schedule, using defined methods to produce reliable results. The specific testing required will be: Alpha Case analysis by microscopy, Metallographic testing of laser cut surfaces, Hardness testing (Vickers, Rockwell), Hydrogen testing by inert gas fusion.

• Ensure accurate records are maintained and traceable to production records.

• Complete routine and daily equipment checks including cleanliness, maintenance, and internal calibration.

• Support the operation of on-site processes in line with NADCAP and customer requirements.

• Provide support during NADCAP audits (and audits for other commodities as required), ensuring that your area is prepared for the audit and any actions are responded to appropriately.

• Complete metallurgical investigations as required to support non-conformance investigations or new product introductions.

• Work closely with other areas (eg. Operations Management, Quality, Special Processes) to ensure manufacturing workflow and that issues are communicated.

Qualifications:

• A metallurgy, materials science or engineering qualification - Desirable.

Experience:

• Significant (5 years+) experience carrying out metallurgical testing - Essential.

• Experience carrying out testing on titanium, nickel alloys and stainless steel - Desirable.

• Experience carrying out Vickers and/or Rockwell hardness testing - Desirable

• Experience carrying out final inspections using tools such as calipers and verniers - Desirable.

• Experience working in aerospace manufacturing - Desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to carry out metallographic, hardness and hydrogen testing – Essential. Ability to maintain accurate records- Essential.

• Good communication and organisation skills- Essential.

• Ability to use both classic metallurgy instruments and computer/software assisted equipment (eg. LECO gas analysers) – Essential.

• Ability to manage workload and ensure that priority jobs are expedited – Essential.

• Knowledge of ASTM standards behind standard metallurgical tests - Desirable.

• Ability to carry out geometric inspections - Desirable.

Salary:

• £28,335.29 basic salary excluding shift premiums

• Available to work 2 shifts (mornings, afternoons)

• 12.5% shift allowance (2 shifts) Shift pay not included in above salary

• Over time paid at time and a half
